CNPq - Research Group: STRUCTURE AND ARCHITECTURE

Introduction

This CNPq Research Group: Structures & Architecture formalizes research and teaching activities since 2005 in the Postgraduate Program of the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism (PPG-FAU) of the University of Brasília (UnB).

It aims to study the relationships between architecture and structural and constructive systems considering conceptual, technical, historical and symbolic aspects, exploring limits and interactions between Architecture and Structural Engineering.

The following lines of research are object of projects and orientations of dissertations and thesis:

  • Interface between Architecture and Structural Engineering;
  • Structural and Constructive Systems in Architecture;
  • History of Construction and Architectural Heritage;
  • Computational and Experimental Methods Applied to Construction and Structures

The research lines of the CNPq Structures and Architecture Group have been subdivided into the following PPG-FAU research lines:

  • Structures and Architecture (Area of Concentration: Technology, Environment and Sustainability);
  • Technology of Production of the Built Environment (Area of Concentration: Technology, Environment and Sustainability);
  • Heritage and Preservation (Area of Concentration: Theory, History and Criticism).

The Est. & Arq. Group has already produced five master's dissertations and three doctoral theses, currently underway two master's thesis and three doctoral theses.

Among the congresses and events we highlight the participation in the International Conference on Structures and Architecture (ICSA), organized by International Association of Structures and Architecture (IASA). The next ICSA 2025 edition counts on the collaboration of the Est. & Arq. Group in the scientific committee.

The discipline Evolution of Structural Form of the PPG-FAU, offered annually, has been used as a specific knowledge base and methodological training. Similar content is offered as optional discipline in Architecture and Urbanism undergraduate course at UnB.

As a result of the research carried out, the book "The Original Palaces of Brasilia" was published in 2014, whose origin was a doctorate thesis of the same title.
